COMMUNICATIONS

The Emporia Police Department Communications Center is the Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) for the City of Emporia and Lyon County. We answer all incoming 9-1-1 calls for the entire county as well as non-emergency calls for the City of Emporia. Our communications operators dispatch police officers for the City of Emporia as well as fire units for Lyon County Fire District #4 and EMS for all of Lyon County. Our dispatchers are certified as Emergency Medical Dispatchers (EMDs). The Emporia Communications Center is considered one of the best communications centers in the state. We are fortunate to have the finest communications operators working for us that can be found anywhere. Our center is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and consists of the following:


i12 fully trained communications operators and 1 communications supervisor


iMinimum of 3 communications operators on duty at all times when fully staffed


iComputer Aided Dispatch (CAD) with integrated mapping system that has the ability to plot all active calls along with plotting latitude and longitude coordinates to pinpoint the location of a cell phone caller


iMobile Data Terminals (MDT’s) to communicate with officers on the street also capable of running drivers license and license tag information as well as warrant checks thru Kansas and the NCIC system


iTouch screen radios and telephones and hydraulic work stations that adjust to each person


iPhase I and Phase II compliant which means we are able to receive the phone number and location, by coordinates, of cell phone callers


iEmergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) certified giving us the ability to provide lifesaving instruction in CPR, child birth and choking to callers until EMS units arrive on scene


i9-1-1 for Kids program is a program in which our communications operators speak at area schools and instruct kids in how to be prepared if they need to call 9-1-1
